Parang La Trek is considered as one of the best treks in India. It is advisable that beginners do not try this trek. You should have prior experience in trekking. As well as, you need to be physically fit so that you do not face difficulties at the time of the trek. When you are going to start this trek, remember that you are going to face some really tricky paths.
A complete scenario which is worth living
A twelve-day long adventure trek will take you through small hamlets, streams, alpine forests, deep gorges of Spiti.and flatlands of Ladakh. It is one of the most famous treks in Ladakh which gives a chance to witness some great sights which are worth seeing.
Kaza, a lovely starting point which is really soothing for a perfect commencement of such an expedition. In the initial lap of the trek, Kibber which is at an altitude of 14000 feet and centuries-old Ki monastery are the ideal places to explore and after crossing numerous narrow river gorges you will reach Dumla. This is the quiet toughest as well as demanding phase of the trek which comes when you are moving from Thaltak Meadow to Jagtha and then to Bomgrojen.
The main stretches are witnessed when you climb the summit up. From the top, you'll find that the beauty of Spiti valley very much influence. With the glimpses of a verdant valley, trekking down to the famous Pare Chu River and walking down enthusiastically toward Dak Karzong.
The trek starts gaining altitude when you enter Spiti valley and takes you to Tso Moriri Lake.
Passing through the valley you can feel the Untouched beauty of nature and witness some rarest species of flora and fauna. The valley challenges your trek by putting some steep turns. One of the most appreciated adventures of this trek is to witness the huge population of the elusive snow leopard which is found near the enigmatic village of Kibber.
This trek offers you a lot in terms of difficulties like vast meadows, deep gorges, lakes and descending from Kibber and trekking to Parang La gives you some really lifetime experience which is worth counting in your travel diaries. Camping at the high summit under the shadow of billion stars which covers the clear night sky is best.

Day 10 – Chumik Shield to Kingdom (4588 m) (14 km)
Day 11 – Kingdom to Karzok (4615 m) (22 km)

Day 1: Manali to Kaza (202 km)
In order to save yourself from hectic and irritating traffic at Rohtang and Kunzum pass it is advisable to leave early. The road is not so good in condition and further divert towards the Kaza road.
You will witness a soothing picture of Spiti valley from Batal, you will find some small villages in the mountains and treat your eyes with the barley and peas fields. The route is then straight from here. At Kaza, arrangements for your night stay in a home or a hotel will be made.
Day 2: Kaza to Chicham (Distance-18 km) Acclimatization Day at Chicham (4270 m)
Two days are booked for acclimatization which is Day 2 and Day 3. Today, after breakfast we will move forward with hiking along the bank of River Spiti, visiting monasteries and Gompa, after that head towards Chicham.
It is a village and the trail takes you through Trolley Bridge which is very famous. You will spend the night in a homestay in the village.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Chicham
Acclimatization Day, you can even rest or go for a short hike.
Day 4: Trek from Chicham to Thaltak (4693 m) (8 km)
Initially, the trek will go through a very well-maintained leveled road, come out of the village and after 45 minutes you reach Dumla which is your campsite for the day. If you are starting the trek from Kibber then you should definitely camp at Duma.
The trail starts in increasing order with the beautiful setting of the Spiti Mountains, it will take around three hours to cross it. The trail is covered with lush green with soil losses lose rocks. On the trek, you will get a sight of Kanamo Peak on the right amidst mountains.
You will reach Thaltak campsite within 6/7 hours, it is a barren land and contains an oasis in between. A glance of Kanamo from here looks lovely. Set your camps here and settle for the day.
Day 5: Thaltak to Borochin (5100 m) (12 km)
Initially, the trail is from Thaltak is descending one, here you will face loose rocks and you need to be careful while getting down, rocks may fall from above. The trail will bring you to the valley’s bottom within an hour.
Here you will come across Rong Nala, which is a river in the valley. The sound of gushing water can be heard, walk along the river's right bank and cross it over a bridge. Ascent to Jukhta starts from here climbing gets difficult because of the screen. Climb up and you are rewarded by the open views of Spiti Mountains.
Reach Borochen after crossing the barren path, this is your campsite for today. There are few water streams and it is located at the base of Parang La. Setup your camps and retire for the night.
Day 6: Borochin to Kharsa Yongma (4850 m) via Parang La Pass (5600 m) (14 km)
Today’s trek is going to be hectic so one needs to be prepared beforehand. Start the trek with a steep climb which is through moraines and will lead you to Thakchu campsite. From here you will pass the zig-zag trail which is an easy one.
Then climb for 3-4 hours to reach the high point, Parang La Pass. Here, the summit offers great views of Spiti, Changthang valleys and Parilungi peak. After scaling the pass get down on the Parang La glacier and from here you can hear the gushing water sounds. Walk carefully because the glacier is crevassed.
After 2 hours of descent, you will reach Lakku campsite and from here you can easily reach Kharsa Yongma or Parang La glacier’s snout within 1.5 hours. Here is your campsite for the day and then you can rest well.
Day 7: Kharsa Yongma to Kapapuche (4700 m)(20 km)

Mode of the journey – By Cab
Walk on the Datang Nala’s riverbed and walk on it for straight 3 hours. You will be crossing many streams on the way with Datang Kongma and Datang Yongma campsites.
Towards the left of Datang Yongma Tsoma Nala flows and Takli La and Lasoma joins it further. After this, you have to descend to your campsite.
Set your camps and enjoy your night.
Day 8: Descending Kapapuche to Kitpodansa (4550 m) (20 km)
Today also the trek is on the river bed (Para River), on the way many streams join Pare Chu River. After crossing this part reach Phalum Phada campsite, there are mini caves and big rocks.
Another is Racholamo campsite which is at two valleys located at their intersection. Trek on the river bed to reach Kitpodansa which lies further, after reaching there set up your camps and rest for the night.
Day 9: Kitpodansa to Chumik Shield (4704 m) (18 km)
Today we will trek towards the left which leads to Norbu Sumdo. You have to cross Parechu River today, the water level will rise so cross it according to the instructions of the guide.
Now, you will be entering the green meadows from the barren part which will have numerous blooming flowers and some streams. Norbu Somdu is the border between Ladakh and Spiti. It is also a Gateway to Ladakh.
Now you will witness the change in vegetation and after a hike of one hour reaches Chumik Shield, which is wide and rich with greenish meadows contains many water springs.
Day 10: Walk from Chumik Shield to Kingdom (4588 m) (14 km)
Today's trek is going to be pleasant and full of excitement, we will trek on the flat meadows and after two hours of the hike, the Mentok peaks are visible, which all covered in snow and give you a beautiful site.
Then we further reach to Tso Moriri Lake’s southern tip. There are no water sources in the Kingdom. Reach there, set up the camps and rest for the entire night.
Day 11: Travel from Kingdom to Karzok (4615 m) (22 km)
We will be trekking along the right bank of Tso Moriri Lake, on the trail you will witness heart-warming views of Lungser Kangri and Shamsher Kangri Peak. Karzok is a village and your campsite for the day. Here, you can explore the culture of the village. The localities are extremely kind and welcome
The total distance to be covered is 22 km and you can reach there in 7/8 hours after an amazing and long trek.
Day 12: Drive back to Leh from Karzok (240 km).
Leaving Karzok early because we have to travel to Leh which is 5 to 6 km long. Traveling services will be arranged by us.
Nights are cold. Day temperature is quite pleasant during the season. You will come across different temperature ranges. It is advisable to carry thermals. This region is known as a cold desert, which means the region remains cold throughout the 12 months. The temperature change depends on the month of the year.
Parang La trek is one of the most difficult treks. It requires prior experience in trekking because it consists of some really tricky paths.
There are no ATMs or Banks here. The nearest one is in Kaza. There is no network here. Your cell phones will workaround and in Kaza and you will lose the connectivity after some kilometers.
By Air
The nearest airport to Kaza is Bhuntar. There are a limited number of flights to Bhuntar. Other than that Chandigarh is the nearest airport.
By Train
The nearest railway station to Kaza is Joginder Nagar at a distance of 365 kilometers. You can catch a toy train from Pathankot Railway Station.
By Bus
The nearest bus stand to Kibber is Kaza and that this is the only place from where a regular HRTC bus plies to Kibber. There are no other buses from any other town like Shimla or Manali.
