This trek is suitable for all trekking enthusiasts even the first time trekkers because it’s a low altitude trek and the difficulty level is easy to moderate. Mukta top trek has an altitude of ~ 3608 m and we will be trekking for 24 kilometers through forest and snow. It’s not as steep as other treks hence suitable for beginners.
The temperature of the Mukta top trek varies, nights are cold but mornings will be pleasant. In winter’s temperature can vary from -2°C to -5°C and in summer it can vary from 8°C to 13°C.

Well, if you are considering to trek in winters then you would definitely miss the forest. Never mind, we have discovered a trek in Uttarakhand in which you can experience both forest and snow, which also unfolds a lot of exciting views and experiences. It’s a virgin trek trail-Mukta top.
The highlight of this trek is ‘trekking through forest for 2 days, in most of the winter treks you will have to leave the green affair within 4-5 hours of trek and all you face in rest is white snow-covered mountains.
Virgin Trail not filled with Hoomans
Mukta top trek is least popular and least crowded during the winter trek season as it’s recently discovered and very few people are aware of it. So on the trek, you can only hear the absolute nature bliss than any noise around.
Ample sightings of birds and animal wildlife
Mukta top trekking trail has abundant nature's treasure, variety of flora and fauna. Since we are trekking in the forest for two days, we can spot and hear a variety of birds and listen to their warble. Tourists have spotted russet sparrows, majestic Himalayan Monal, Himalayan bulbuls, lemon rumped warblers blue whistling thrushes and more. If you are a bird watcher you would love this trekking trail. Along with the birds, you can spot forest deer and black bears and barasingha (swamp deer).
Forests you won’t find anywhere
Because of 2 days forest trail, the variation in forests is comparable only to the ones in Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek. You can feel how nature changes the growth and type of plants. The lower altitudes have Bamboo Forests and as you climb up, Maple, Pine & Oak trees start being abundant and as you go higher, you will start seeing Rhododendrons as well. You can as well camp under the tall trees. Adding, it’s very surprising to see Bamboo forests in this trek, they are one of the highlights, as they are rarely seen on any other trek.

This trek also hosts the best part of the Kedarkantha trek, the heavenly clearings in the forests and the open meadows. Mukta top also gives you the experience of similar clearings after the dense forests, you can even camp in one of these meadows.
The meadows are covered with powdery snow in winters without any footsteps on them, thanks to the low popularity of this trek. Mukta top is surrounded by famous mountain peaks, if the weather is clear you can spot the panoramic views of peaks– Gangotri peak, Bandarpoonch (I) (II), Top of Nag Tibba, Mt. Jaonli, Mt. Kala Nag and Draupadi Ka Danda.

Expanded Itinerary
Day 1: Dehradun to Gangori (6/7 hours) (4,550 feet) (150 km)
- From Dehradun we will travel to Gangori in Uttarkashi which is 150 km in distance and you will reach there in 6 to 7 hours. We start from Dehradun early in the morning so that we can reach the base camp on time.
- The drive to Gangori is delightful and along the bank of River Ganga, we go through the forest which covers a large area. Reach your base camp which is beside Asi Ganga River.
Day 2: Gangori to Kuflon by taxi (20 minutes) (4,600 feet) (7 km); Kuflon to Shiladuni (4 km) (4 hours)
- Early morning we will start our journey by taxi to reach Kuflon, we will reach in 20 minutes and trek starts from there, the trail is well marked through a market, further steep climb starts, the trail takes you through a pine forest. Ascend for 2.5 km more now the dense forest begins which is embedded with variety of trees such as are -Oaks, Maples and Rhododendrons. In the forest now you can spot different species of birds as well.
- As you trek further there is a stream and after crossing the stream trek for 20 more minutes and you will enter a forest clearing which is not very wide, on one side there is shepherd’s hut and on the other side you can spot some snow covered mountains. Shiladuni is a forest clearing and a beautiful campsite, there are multiple streams near it. We will camp at this location for day 2, Enjoy food there and relax in tents.
Day 3: Shiladuni to Chaithathar (5/6 hours) (9,600 feet) (5 km)
- We will start our trek next day early, Start trekking towards Chaithathar, today’s trek is going to be slightly difficult and the climbs are steep. Trek through the forest of Oaks and maples for an hour, they are present in a huge quantity. Then cross a stream with the help of stones or wooden logs placed there. Reach mid-point of your trek that is Kuari from here the campsite is 3 km away.
- From kunari the trek gets a little tough, ascend through a rocky path for one hour and you will reach a place from where the fetching valley view and the campsite for Day 1 and Day 2 is visible. Now, go through bamboo forests which are not usually found in other treks of Uttarakhand.
- Reach your campsite Chaithathar, it is amidst the forest a small beautiful clearing, there is a flowing stream and a shepherd’s hut. The birds from here can be spotted and you can enjoy birding here. Have dinner and enjoy night in your tents.
Day 4: Chaithathar to Mukta Tal (4 hours) (10,800 feet) (4 km)
- On 4th day we will head towards Mukta Tal through forest and it’s a gradual ascent. The trail is well defined which will lead you to a small clearing which is covered by snow during the winter season, you can reach there in two hours.
- From there you can have phenomenal views of Bandarpoonch, Nag Tibba and Kala Nag. Now, trek for few minutes on an ascending trail from where a hill is visible which is covered with oaks and birch.
- Trek through bracing meadows and you can reach your campsite in an hour. Mukta Tal is a small pond and close sight of Bandarpooch can be seen from here. Place your camp and enjoy the ravishing views offered by this place, and enjoy with some fire camp around.
Day 5: Muta Tal to Mukta Top then to Kuari (6/7 hours) (9 km)
- Today’s trek trail leads to Mukta Top, the meadows above the Tal trail takes you to the top. This trail is an ascending one and offers extraordinary views of Bandarpoonch and Kala Nag whole ranges are visible, the view of them makes the sight pleasant. You can reach the summit in 6/7 hours there is a Tal which is named “Siyari Tal” and the summit views are incredible.
- You can spot the peaks such as Gangotri group of peaks, Nag Tibba, Kala Nag, Bndarpoonch and Jaonli, spend time there having glance of every peak, relax, play and take a lot of photographs at this scenic place and retrace your steps to Kuari which was the mid-point of your trek on Day 3. This is your campsite and the water source is the stream, there are multiple streams around this place.
- Altitude – Mukta Top (11,838 feet) – Kuari (7,781 feet)
Day 6: Kuari to Kuflon (4 hours) (4,600 feet) (6 km); Drive to Dehradun (155 km) (6/7 hours)
- Follow the same route to go Kuflon, the trail is through forest, while descending spot Himalayan birds and wildlife photographers can click some of the best shots here, Shiladuni is a great place where the maximum number of birds are found.
- When you are about to reach Kuflon you can see the Asi Ganga River powerhouse on the way. After reaching Kuflon, drive back to Dehradun and you can reach there around evening 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
- Mukta top is a 6 day duration trek, the experience you gain and the memories you make will last forever, every day spent in the trek lays a carpet for unlimited thrill, fun and adventure. Trek has the best views to capture. Abundant forest with a variety of birds and animals, bamboo forest on the way, snow-capped mountains and amazing views of surrounding Gangotri peak.
