Bilikal Betta also referred to as Ranganathaswamy Betta stands at 3780ft situated 55 km away from Bangalore on Kanakapura region. The name of the hill is derived from Ranganathaswamy temple located at the hilltop which was built under a large, white rock. Bili is a Kannada word that means white and Kallu is referred to as a stone. So, this hill is also known as the White Hills as you can find lots of white rocks at the hilltop. Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta trek is all about narrow routes, bamboos, encountering animals and a lot more. The entire trail is properly paved as the pilgrims use on a daily basis to visit the temple. Just a 2-hour drive from Bangalore, you can easily arrive at this serene place.
Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta falls under the Eastern Ghats and the entire area is covered with shrub forest. You need to take permission for trekking as this area is maintained by the Karnataka forest department. Elephants and other wild animals live in the surrounding forests and sometimes they cross to the Bilikal Betta trail. When reaching the top the view is scenic as you can witness the Kanakapura ranges including Savanadurga, Kabbala Durga, and BM Betta.

Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta Trek - Short Itinerary
Day 01: Koonala Doddi – Ranganathaswamy Temple; Take a bus or your private vehicle to reach the Koonala Doddi village. After walking towards the Maruti temple, your climb will begin.
Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta Trek – Detailed Itinerary
The base point of the trek is Koonala Doddi where you will find a Maruti temple. Take a right turn from the temple and begin your climb. The path is quite narrow, filled with trees and bushes. After walking for half km, the path becomes a bit steep and the forest denser. On the route, you may have chances to encounter bears, elephants, and other wildlife. Walking for half an hour, you can see a large boulder. From here, you will start walking on a steep trail. A few stretches are there where you are required to climb with your hands and feet. However, a few places are there where the trail is flat and you can take some rest.
A maximum of 2.5 hours is required to reach the top. There is also a trail solely for private vehicles that reach the temple from the Kanakapura side. At the top, you can see the Ranganathaswamy temple is at your left. A huge granite boulder is placed above the head of the temple and there is a small pond in front of the temple. Many excursions are conducted in this hill and the best part is this place is not yet commercialized so you can relax and explore the area peacefully.
For descending just follow the same route that you took for climbing. Within an hour you will arrive at the base. Another way to come down is to follow the vehicle trail, but you will enter the Kanakapura area and Chakanahalli as well as Sunghatta villages. This is a long route and you need to walk for 3 kms for reaching Sunghatta village. Please keep in mind that there are fewer buses towards Kanakapura from the village.
If you have an extra day, then camp at night and witness the glorious sunrise the next morning. You can also do a night trek but you need to be cautious of wild animals. Please come with a group during the night trek and never come solo. The last point to get food items is at Dodda Maralawadi and after that while climbing or reaching the top no shop is available.

As Bilikal Betta falls in the Kanakapura region, the place has a tropical climate. During summers there is more rainfall during winters and the average temperature is 25.50C. April is the warmest month with a temperature of 290C. In December the average temperature is 22.50C.
