Hatu Peak Trek – The Crowned and Offbeat Trek of Narkanda
Surrounded by breathtaking views of nature and lovely orchard, the 7 km trek route to Hatu Peak is an easy one. Hatu Peak, is one of the offbeat places near Shimla where you can plan for a weekend getaway or a vacation with your closed ones. Snow-capped peaks, apple orchards and Narkanda town makes this place a major attraction. You can easily reach the top on foot, a car or a bike. When reaching the top, the prolific views of the mountains and Hatu Mata temple welcome the travelers with their magnificent presence. The 7 km trekking route from Narkanda to the peak takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.
The Hatu Peak situated in Narkanda, soars at a staggering height of 11,155 ft. is the highest one in the Shimla region. Encompassed by awe-inspiring mountains and wrapped in a lush green forest comprising fir, cedar, spruce, blue pine and deodar, this peak is certainly an Earth’s paradise. However, this place is known for the apple orchards. At the top of the hill, there is the Hatu Mata temple which is of immense religious importance for the locals. The temple was dedicated to King Ravana’s wife, Mandodari.
In addition to the peak’s cultural and historical importance, you will find a small stove shaped formation beside the right side of the temple. According to mythology, Pandava brothers used to cook their food at the time of Agyaat Vaas. If you have an extra day you can also camp there and spend quality time under the stars. This trek offers you a complete package like any Himalayan trek with captivating meadows, pitch-black pine forests, impressive mountain views and the excitement to walk on snow.
Day 01: Narkanda – Hatu Peak
On the way to the top, you can see some shepherd huts, referred to as ‘Gujjar Kotha’. These huts are temporary resting areas for shepherds who bring their buffaloes and cows to graze in the surrounding areas. Moreover, you also get to witness a small pond where the sparkling waters will welcome you with enjoyment. You should take a break to relax and admire the surrounding beauty for capturing a few moments.
The weather is always friendly and cool throughout the year. With the arrival of winter, you get to witness snowfall so please layer up with winter wear. The ideal time for trekking to Hatu Peak is from March until October. In the summertime, the temperature remains 8 to 200C and during winter it comes down to -100C.
You will find an ATM at Narkanda which is the starting point of your trek. Although the shops and eateries around accept cards, it is wise to carry cash.
