Lohagad (Loha + gad) the name says it all. It's the iron fort one of the strongest forts of Sahyadris.

Lohagad is a very widespread fort. There are 4 doors to Lohagad from the nearby village -Lohgadwadi. i.e. ‘Ganesh Darwaja', ‘Narayan Darwaja', ‘Hanuman Darwaja’ and ‘Maha Darwaja’.

The famous spot on Lohagad is ‘Vinchu Kata’ – the scorpion tail. Amazing view of Pawana Dam is also visible from the back side of Lohagad. Some sculptures can also be seen on Maha Darwaja.

Itinerary

05.00 AM – Start the journey from Mumbai or Pune for a trip to Lonavala.

08.00 AM – Reach Lonavala and move towards Lohagad fort by jeep

08.45 AM – Reach the base and go for breakfast.

09.30 AM – Start the trek towards the Lohagad fort

11.00 AM – Post having a trek for an hour and reach the top of the Lohagad fort and start exploring the place.

1.00 PM – After two hours, it is time to descend down.

2.30 PM – It would take around 2 hours to descend down. So, after reaching down, get started with the lunch.

3.30 pm – Finally, the trek is over and the ride back to Mumbai or Pune starts

Places to Visit

The fort is a splendid one to view and explore. The fort is built in an elevation of about 1033 metres. And to get to the top of the fort, one has to take the stairs. There are 4 gates that the stairs lead to. The first gate is the Ganesh Darwaza, the second gate is the Narayand Darwaza, the third gate is the Hanuman Darwaza, and the 4th gate is the Maha Darwaza. Narayana and the Hanuman Darwaza were used as a godown for storing the granary and the Hanuman Darwaza is the most ancient of them all.

There is an old Dargah that one comes across after crossing the Maha Darwaza. There are the remnants of the court beside the Dargah. The treasure of Nana Phadnis is kept in the Laxmi kothi which is an area with a lot of rooms. Also, there are two cannons placed in the front of this place.

Vinchu Kata is on the western side of the fort. It is 1500 metre long and watching this place from the fort looks like a scorpion’s sting. Hence, this is the name given to this place which means Scorpion’s sting in Hindi. This portion was built to keep a check on the vicinity and on the enemies.

The distance of Lohagad from Mumbai is of about 115 km.

The distance of Lohagad from Lonavala is of about 15 km.

From Lohagad Wadi it would take around 40 minutes to 1 hour to climb up to the fort. The Lohagad fort trekking is quite easy.
