About Kuari Pass Trek

Kuari pass trek is famous for its awesome views of the Nanda Devi sanctuary and also a lot of Himalayan peaks like the Nanda Devi, Dunagiri , kamet, Hathi, Abl Gamin, Mana and Changabang. We will also witness dense forests on our way. Most of the trail is through the forest only. These forests are mostly oak and rhododendrons.

At night where you will be resting in your camps, apart from resting you can also do star gazing in the clear sky. Kuari pass is also famous for its star gazing views. The clear sky full of stars is something you will never get in the cities.

Package Details

The Kuari pass trek is of 6 days and 5 nights. You will have to reserve in advance for this trek. There are also some rules for cancellation. If you wish to cancel the trek 15 days before you wll get a refund of only 50% and if cancelled before 30 days 100% refund will be made and if cancelled within 15 days no refund will be given.

There are various offers included in the package. Meals, camping equipments etc are all included in the package. In case of any travelling, comfortable Volvo busses or cabs will be arranged for the trekkers.

You will be witnessing one of the most beautiful places in India, with lush green meadows, the dense oak forest, the rich flora and fauna. All in all it will be new experience.

Location and how to reach :-

For the trek you need to first reach to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. From there our trekking team will take you. You can reach Rishikesh by the following 3 options :-

  • By air – the Dehradun airport called as Jolly grant airport is the nearest airport to Rishikesh which is 35 km away.
  • By Bus - if you are travelling from Delhi or NCR then there is a bus depot in Rishikesh where buses from Dehradun, Delhi all come.
  • By train - the nearest railway station is Haridwar which is 25 km away from Rishikesh. Trains from all over India come to Haridwar and then from Haridwar you can take a bus to reach Rishikesh.
  • By Road - Driving up to Rishikesh is fun as it has got various national highways which is pretty safe to travel.

Itinerary :-

Day 01:- Rishikesh to Joshimath

  • Uttarakhand is one of India’s most beautiful places. Trekkers from different part of the country come here to enjoy the beauty. So this day we will only let the trekkers to roam around the market, and the local place and enjoy the beauty of Uttarakhand.
  • Trekkers will be taken from Rishikesh to Joshimath by Volvo busses or cabs. It will be a total of 1890 meters drive. They can rest the whole day in Joshimath, get comfortable with the environment this day. This day concludes.

Day 02:- Joshimath to Dhak and then to Guling

  • We start off early this day since we will have to cover a long distance. First we will drive from Joshimath to Dhak which is a 12 kilometer drive and then we will be trekking to Guling form Dhak which takes approximately 5 hours to trek.
  • The trek in Dhak starts and then the trail leads to various ascents. You will also encounter a village on your way. The trail continues to the farms. Here you can actually see the various farming of crops. You will be crossing the Dhauli Ganga river and the Vishnugad-Tapovan Hydro Power Station this day.
  • The trail takes you through various wheat fields, poppy fields, and many more cultivated lands. Make sure to click pictures here as they offer a perfect background. And you sjould also carry proper water bottles with you, in case you run out of water you can refill it in one of the water streams.
  • You will also be witnessing the first oak trees on your way to Guling. After reaching Guling locate a beautiful site and draw your camps. The second day ends here.

Day 3:- Guling to Khulara

  • This day is comparatively less hectic and tiring than the previous day. We will be trekking for around 4 hours and will be covering a 6 kilometer of distance. The path is smooth enough. It has got gradual ascents.
  • Your entire trail will be through the oak forest. In between you will also get water streams which are clear and good , you can also drink from these water streams. You will also witness the Hathi Ghoda peaks on your way.
  • Locate a beautiful place in Khulara and draw your camps. You can bon fire at night and star gaze at the same time. The view is just awesome and mesmerizing. You will not feel like returning back to your normal routine after this trek.

Day 4:- Khulara to Tali

  • The final and the major destination will be achieved this day. The trekkers will be trekking to Tali via Kuari pass. The total distance is 11 kilometers which will take approximately 7 hours to trek.
  • The ascent is quite steep as you start trekking from Khulara. You also take a look into 360 degrees of the mountain this day. You can take a view of all the mountains as you trek like the Neelkanth, Dronagiri, Nilgiri and Hathi Ghoda peaks.
  • After few hours of trekking you will reach Kuari pass and the view from there is breathtaking. You can spot a place there and draw your camps and rest the whole night. It will be the best day of the entire trek. This day concludes in a happy note.

Day 05:- Tali to Auli and then drive to Joshimath

  • This day we will be trekking for 4 hours to Auli and then drive back to Joshimath where we started our trek. It is a 16 kilometer drive. The trails will lead you to a lake and a temple. You can wait there and give your gratitude in the temple.
  • The scenery is so beautiful that it cant be described in words. You will have an amazing time while trekking. After spending few hours in Auli, you will be taken back to Joshimath . you can rest the whole night in Joshimath as you will have a long and a tiring day.

Day 6:- Joshimath to Rishikesh

  • The whole trip comes to an end. This day you will drive back to Rishikesh which is 225 kilometers away and takes 7-8 hours of drive. From rishikesh you can board your trains of busses for your way back to home.
  • These 6 days will be very memorable for you if you plan to trek to Kuari pass. People can also visit with their families and children as the walks are easy.

Difficulty level :-

The trek to Kuari pass is long trek. But it is considered as one of the easiest treks in Uttarakhand. But you should be equipped with proper trekking shoes, water bottles and all the necessary items for trekking.

To be in a safer side it is required to do some exercises before you go to the trek as it will help build up your stamina.

Weather :-

The weather is very pleasant throughout the year. But you should go in the month of March to may. In monsoon the paths are really very slippery. In winters you will witness a lot of snow on your way and he mountains will also be covered with snow.

Accommodation :-

All the basic equipments like the sleeping bags, tents will be provided. And also if there is any hotel stay, it will also be provided by the organization with whom you are booking.

Meal :-

All the meals are covered in the package. Veg breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. In case of places where meals cannot be cooked , there packed meals will be provided to the trekkers. But you should carry your own dry fruits, energy bars and chocolates to keep you warm in the entire trek.

ATM points and connectivity :-

There are a lot of ATMs on your way to Joshimath from Rishikesh. You can draw money. It is suggested to carry money always and not depend on the further route for ATM. As you may need cash in the entire trek.

Permission/ passes :-

All the permits and permissions are taken by the organization who is planning the entire trek. You just need to provide with your documents and then you will be good to go.

Things to carry :-

  • A sturdy backpack which contains all sorts of necessary things. The backpack should be water proof.
  • A first aid kit which should have all basic medicines for nausea, vomiting etc. Dettol, sanitizer, bandage etc.
  • Water bottle, flasks to store hot water.
  • Energy bars and protein bars as in higher altitude walking is really exhausting.
  • Extra pair of warm clothes, gloves etc.
  • All toiletries product in the bag.
  • A walking stick.

  • If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
  • If cancellations are made within 0-30 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
  • In case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain activities may be cancelled and in such cases the our service partner will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity.

Kuari Pass is a popular winter trek and people come here to witness the snow. Snow can be witnessed here till April. Once spring arrives, the whole area undergoes a transformation with rhododendrons and wild flowers blooming everywhere. September and October can also be good times to visit this place as the weather remains perfect and the sky is clear.

Beginners who don't have any prior trekking experience can easily do this trek. The trek is however long spread across days and hence would require some amount of physical fitness and stamina.

This is a trek that will be easy but will test your endurance. If you are a person who is not physically fit and mostly leads a sedentary life, then it is advisable to indulge in some form of physical activity like exercises or sports to make yourself fit for the trek. Legs and calf muscles need to be worked upon especially. People who are not very comfortable with treks at such high altitudes can do some form of yoga as it helps in building mental and physical confidence.

You should have basic physical fitness to do this trek.Carrying basic first aid kit with yourself during the trip is also compulsory. Consult your doctor before coming to this trek and ensure that you are medically fit to go for this trek as the trek does have some difficult terrains and climatic conditions. It is also a must to buy raincoats and umbrellas prior to the trip as the trek happens in the monsoons season. Also make sure you have sufficient warm garments for the trip.

A rucksack is which is sturdy and can accommodate a sufficient amount of things is required. It should also be waterproof as this will protect your belongings from getting wet from rains.

Porters and mules can be hired at the start of the trek to carry your personal belongings.

A good pair of trekking shoes is essential for this trek. There might be portions where you might have to walk through small streams or rocky portions, so a sturdy pair of shoes is a must.

A guide is necessary for this trek as a guide is well versed with the route. It will more convenient to hire a guide as you do not have to worry about directions or anything like that. A guide also might know some shortcuts to the destination and can help you save time.
