Minkiani pass trek is bit challenging trek and not meant for the beginners. Prior physical training and camping and trekking experience are required to opt for the Minkiani pass trek. One can do this over as a quick weekend trip. The Minkiani pass trek has a maximum elevation of 4035 m providing a breathtaking view of spectacular peaks. The total distance covered in Minkiani trek is 20 km, which can be covered in 3 days.

 The best time to visit is from December to April to opt for Minkiani trek. During this period, the trekkers can enjoy the different shades of nature. Location & How to reach

Getting From/To: To begin Minkiani Pass trek, you need reach Gaggal chowk in Dharamshala. Gaggal can be reached by the following modes of transport :

  • Gaggal by air: Gaggal Airport is a domestic airport located in Gaggal near Dharamshala in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as Kangra Airport or Dharamshala-Kangra Airport. The airport is 14 km south-west of Dharamshala.
  • Gaggal By rail: Kangra Mandir railway station, Kangra railway station are the very nearby railway stations to Gaggal. However,     Jalandhar city railway station is major railway station approx at distance of 125 km from Gaggal.

Best time

Minkiani trek famous as one of the best campsite places in India is preferred during the months of May to October.

Itinerary 

Day 01: Reporting in Gaggal chowk.

The day 1 start when you reach at Gaggal chowk and report your arrival. On arrival in the town, you will need to provide your travel plans on booking and we will arrange the pick up and transfer. After some time we will start the first day of our Himalaya trekking tour. We will drive till Sally Village. On the end top of Sally Village, there is a permanent base camp.

 The campsite gives a panoramic view. It offers a scenic view of Khauli valley and snow-capped mountains. We will have our breakfast and pack our lunch. Our actual trek starts from this point. The distance between snow monk camp and Kareri Lake is 8kms. It takes around 5 hrs to cover the distance. The route between Sally Village and kareri village is simple. The trail passes through a dense forest of pine Bridges, freshwater streams and rivulets.

 Another one hour of trek will lead you to single Kareri Lake, starting right from the wide concrete bridge connecting Kareri Village to Salli and Noli villages. This bridge is over Lyund Rivulet originating from Kareri Lake at the base of Minkiani Peak of Dhauladhar Mountains of Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. The trek from Kareri Village to Kareri Lake is mostly downhill trek. The Kareri Lake is at an altitude of 8038 ft above the sea level. The melting snow from the Dhauladhar ranges forms the the origin of this Lake. The area near the lake provides an ideal place for campsite. We will pitch our tents here and explore the Lord Shiva temple located near the Lake. This day stretch helps in acclimatisation for the next day trek of this Himalaya trekking tour.

Day 02: Trek to Minkiani Pass and back to Kareri Lake.

You will start early morning post breakfast. Today's trek is the tougher one. But each step of the trekkers is a step closer to heaven. The trail passes alpine forests, dilapidated bridges and rivulets. The Minkiani trek is famous for the trail where you cross Lyund river again and again. After 4-5 hrs of a tiring climb, you will reach to Minkiani pass. Minkiani pass is located at an altitude of 14000 ft. 

The Minkiani Pass offers you breathtaking views of the majestic peaks of the northern region like Sickle Moon (6574 mts) and Brammah (6515m) falling in Kishtwar region of Kashmir. You have made it to the summit after a long strenuous trek. This is the time to cherish and congratulate each other. These memories will be recalled as a perfect weekend trip. 

The Minkiani pass is used by the Gaddis (Himalayan shepherds) in the summer to take their flock from the Kangra to Chamba valleys to their meadows. After spending some time and clicking some pictures we will start our downhill trek to Kareri Lake. Stay overnight at Kareri Lake campsite. This camping trip could not be any better while we stay overnight, in the lap of Himalaya. Camping in India has been trending these days and you will notice how youth and elders all enjoy sitting around the fire, singing and enjoying the night.

Day 03: Trek to Snow monk camp and back to Gaggal.

After savouring healthy breakfast, we will start our trek back to snow monk camp. After 4 hrs of trekking, we will reach to Snow monk camp at the base of Salli village. The troops will have the lunch together and will share their experiences. Cab facilities will be available for the further transition. A final drive to Gaggal chowk and our adventurous unforgettable weekend trip ends here. One the way back you can cherish the unending memories of one of the best camping places in India. Difficulty Level:

The Minkiani trek is a relatively difficult compared to other Himalaya trekking tour in India. It is meant for experienced trekker. No doubt, it is one of the best treks in India which gives in a panoramic view of the mighty Himalayan peaks. Adequate training and experience are needed before doing this trek.

Weather:

Winter temperatures can dip to -4C at night. The trail can be quite windy, especially in the higher areas which are open. Highly recommended wearing appropriate layers (at least 3 to 5 layers) of winter trek cloth to overcome the chill.

Two days tented accommodation at the campsite.

Meal:

Veg meals will be served from the first day to last day of the trek. During trekking packed food will be served. All meals will be delicious and freshly prepared.

The best time to do the Mankiani Pass trek is from May to October.The weather is amazing during this time of the year. You can also witness all the picturesque views clearly. The temperatures are pleasant during the day but during the night, the temperatures can drop to lower temperatures. During winters, the temperatures drop and trekking becomes very difficult.

It is a challenging trek that stretches over 2-3 days. People who are experienced in trekking or have been to treks of this nature generally opt for this trek. Beginners who do not have any prior trekking experience are not advisable to do this trek. This requires a lot of physical fitness and training.

This trek will require good physical fitness.. If you are a person who is not physically fit and mostly leads a sedentary life, then it is advisable to indulge in some form of physical activity like exercises or sports to make yourself fit for the trek. Legs and calf muscles need to be worked upon especially. People who are not very comfortable with treks at high altitudes can do some form of yoga as it helps in building mental and physical confidence.

You should be fit enough physically to do this trek.Carrying basic first aid kit with yourself during the trip is also compulsory. Consult your doctor before coming to this trek and ensure that you are medically fit to go for this trek as the trek does have some difficult terrains and climatic conditions. It is also a must to buy raincoats and umbrellas prior to the trip as the trek happens in the monsoons season. Also make sure you have sufficient warm garments for the trip.

A rucksack is which is sturdy and can accommodate a sufficient amount of things is required. It should also be waterproof as the trek happens during the monsoon season and this would protect your belongings.

Porters and mules will be present to carry the camping equipment. However if you want porters to carry your personal luggage, then you can easily hire them at your personal cost.

A good pair of trekking shoes is essential for this trek. There might be portions where you might have to walk through small streams or rocky portions, so a sturdy pair of shoes is a must.

A guide is necessary for this trek as a guide is well versed with the route. It will more convenient to hire a guide as you do not have to worry about directions or anything like that. A guide also might know some shortcuts to the destination and can help you save time.

The Triund trek is a trek of moderate to challenging level of difficulty. Beginners who do not have any prior trekking experience generally do not prefer this trek. It requires good amount of physical strength, experience and endurance.
