Located at the base of Dhauladhar Range between the Kangra and Chamba Districts in Himachal Pradesh, Baleni Pass is positioned at a soaring height of 3750 meters from the sea level.

This trekking route has gained some recognition for the adventurous terrain and experience it offers. On the route, the trekkers can also explore the splendid rock cave edified by the Gaddi Shephards.

Just below the pass, is a glacial lake called as Kareri Lake, which is also another popular trekking destination. Once you reach the summit of this trek you can witness stunning views of the Pir Panjal and Chamba Valley.

There are a number of glacial lakes found around the Baleni Pass. On Kangra side, one can witness the crystal clear waters of the Kareri Lake while the Chamba Side provides   fascinating views of Kali Kund, Lam Dal and Nag Dal lakes.

Baleni Pass is accessed through the Khauli Valley which is also the source of Khauli River, at an elevation of about 3,750 meters located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

The trek to Baleni Pass is one of the most stunning alpine treks in Himachal Pradesh. The trail passes through several gushing streams, lush green meadows and dense forests that are home to numerous flora and fauna.

The Baleni Pass trek originates from Salli village and passing through a thick pine forest. From Salli village there is a gradual ascend to Rehla campsite. The next day’s climb takes ones over the eastern ridge and approaches the pass.

It will be a full day trek descending back to Rehla camp. Baleni Pass also offers access to Lam Dal seven holy lakes which lies in the vicinity.

The trek is an enduring and challenging one, hence, people who have done some treks prior to this will find it easier. This is a 3 day trek and therefore you need to stock up some food supplies on the way.

Location & How to reach

The nearest railhead is Pathankot and it generally takes 3 hours to reach Dharamshala or Mcleodganj from there. From Dharamshala, we take a local bus or taxi to Salli village from where the trek starts.

Itinerary

Day 01:  Trek to Rehla Camp (2800 M) 12 kms / 6 hrs

  • Post breakfast, departure for trek to Rehla Camp
  • Arrive around lunch time. Rehla camp offers one of the most spectacular views of the Dhauladhar Himalayas range beyond the Baleni Pass.
  • Rasna/ Lemonade on arrival to be served
  • Post lunch, pitching & allotment of tents on sharing basis
  • Soup time followed by dinner and campfire
  • Soup time followed by dinner and campfire
  • Overnight in tents (Group Sharing basis)

Day 02:  Climb to Baleni Top (3765 M) 2 kms

  • Post breakfast, Height gain day to Baleni Top. Great spectacular views of the Dhauladhar snow mountains from the pass
  • Return back to the camp around lunch time
  • Evening at leisure
  • Soup time followed by dinnerand campfire
  • Overnight in tents (Group Sharing basis)

Day 03:  Trek down to The Base Camp at village Salli

  • Post breakfast, departure for trek to Base Camp
  • Arrive around lunch time

Weather

Best months to trek to Baleni Pass are April–June and August-December. In winters, temperatures are very low and hence it is advisable to travel in summer or spring. There are subzero temperatures at night and day temperatures are between 10- 20 degree Centigrade

There are no ATMs on this way, so make sure you withdraw some substantial cash with you before starting the trek. ATMs are available at Dharamshala, Pathankot and Kareri.

The best times to do the Baleni Pass trek are during the months of either April to June or August to December..The weather is amazing during this time of the year. You can also witness all the picturesque views clearly. The temperatures are pleasant during the day but during the night, the temperatures can drop to sub zero temperatures. During winters, the temperatures drop and trekking becomes very difficult.

It is moderately challenging trek. People who are experienced in trekking or have been to treks of this nature generally opt for this trek. Beginners who do not have any prior trekking experience generally do not opt for this trek. However, if you are person who is keen on adventure and want to try new things, you can surely join this trek.

This trek will require good physical fitness.. If you are a person who is not physically fit and mostly leads a sedentary life, then it is advisable to indulge in some form of physical activity like exercises or sports to make yourself fit for the trek. Legs and calf muscles need to be worked upon especially. People who are not very comfortable with treks at high altitudes can do some form of yoga as it helps in building mental and physical confidence.

You should be fit enough physically to do this trek.Carrying basic first aid kit with yourself during the trip is also compulsory. Consult your doctor before coming to this trek and ensure that you are medically fit to go for this trek as the trek does have some difficult terrains and climatic conditions. It is also a must to buy raincoats and umbrellas prior to the trip as the trek happens in the monsoons season. Also make sure you have sufficient warm garments for the trip.

A rucksack is which is sturdy and can accommodate a sufficient amount of things is required. It should also be waterproof as the trek happens during the monsoon season and this would protect your belongings.

Porters and mules will be present to carry the camping equipment. However if you want porters to carry your personal luggage, then you can easily hire them at your personal cost.

A good pair of trekking shoes is essential for this trek. There might be portions where you might have to walk through small streams or rocky portions, so a sturdy pair of shoes is a must.

A guide is necessary for this trek as a guide is well versed with the route. It will more convenient to hire a guide as you do not have to worry about directions or anything like that. A guide also might know some shortcuts to the destination and can help you save time.

The Triund trek is a trek of moderate to challenging level of difficulty. Beginners who do not have any prior trekking experience generally do not prefer this trek. It requires good amount physical strength, experience and endurance.
