This trek is one of the few treks with the most scenic views which you can enjoy almost any month of the year. This trek is an easy trek and one of the best for beginners but tests your endurance because you can’t camp near Tungnath or Chandrasheela. You have to ascent and descent on the same day from the Chopta campsite. It takes around 7-8 hours to complete this trek.

When the dawn breaks and the valley in front of you still wear a thick blanket of clouds. Behind the valley are some majestic Himalayan peaks which are waiting to get drenched in the first rays of the sun. Then the magical moment comes when the sun finally appears from the back of Dunagiri & Nanda Devi Peaks and the sky changes its colour from yellow to orange to red. Stacked Rocks all around you will fill your soul with new positive hopes, you can try some creative shots with them too. To experience something like this all you have to do is trek 1 km from the famous Tungnath temple. To relish this sunrise view if you are camping at Chopta, you will need to start the trek at around 3 AM. If you are lucky you might find a group of Himalayan Tahr keeping an eye on you while you are on your way up to the summit of Chandrashila. Chandra means Moon and Shila means Rock, according to one legend Moon god Chandra spent time here in remorse while another legend says Lord Rama meditated at this place after defeating Ravan.
Panch Kedar is the group of five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. After the Mahabharata war when Pandavas were searching for Lord Shiva, as the sin committed by them can only be pardoned by him. Shiva took the form of a bull and later the body parts rematerialized at these five different locations which are known as Panch Kedar. Tungnath is the place where the bahu(hands) were seen. The other four Panch Kedar are Kedarnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar.
The whole trek is picturesque right from the beginning, as you start your trek through the dense Rhododendron forest. In spring season it’s one of the most beautiful places around the world when Rhododendrons are in full bloom. Walking through the open meadows on a well-paved path with some dazzling views around what else can anyone ask for, it’s a perfect trek for beginners. The whole region is rich in Flora and Fauna as it is a part of the Kedarnath Wildlife sanctuary. You can easily spot Pika- a small mountain-dwelling mammal which is like a rat and has no tail. If you are lucky you might find Monal the state bird of Uttarakhand and the national bird of Nepal in the bushes around you. It is somehow similar to a peacock. The Chandrashila trek is one of the best short treks you can do this winters. Dazzling views of the valley and the panoramic view from the summit of Chandrashila are unmatched. Walking in between the meadows when they wear a thick white blanket and if you are lucky you might spot the Monal bird which is the national bird of Nepal and the state bird of Uttarakhand.
Day 00: Delhi - Rishikesh(254 km l 5-6 hours drive)
Day 01: Rishikesh-Chopta (210 km l 7-8 hours drive), Reach by late evening & sleep early
Day 02: Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila-Chopta (6-7 hours of Trek to a serene 360 view of Garhwal Himalayan Range
Day 03: Chopta-Sari Village (40-50 min of drive) - Trek to Deoria Tal - Back to Sari Village - Drive back to Rishikesh.
Day 04: Reach Delhi.
Day 00: Depart from Delhi around 10:00 pm. Pickup Point - Majnu Ka Tila.
Day 01: Rishikesh to Chopta
The distance between Chopta and Rishikesh is about 210 km and will take around 7-8 hours. The drive is beautiful as the Ganges and its tributaries will accompany you throughout the day. You will be crossing Dev Prich is the most scenic one, make sure you sit on the left side of the bus. A beautiful evening awaits for you at Chopta, which you will cherish your whole life. Overnight stay at the campsite, take proper rest as tomorrow.
Day 02: Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila – Chopta
The trek starts from Chopta and is a well-paved path till the Tungnath temple. If you like bird photography, it’s time to take your camera out and look in the branches of the nearby trees. Fire-tailed Sunbown Dipper, Kingfisher, Several Species of Woodpeckers, Snow Patridge, Mrs. Gould's Sunbird, Russett Sparrow, Tickell's Leaf Warbler and many more are sighted commonly. After a 3.5 km trek, you will reach the Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple. If you hear a whistling sound, there is a high chance of a Monal around you which is the state bird of the Uttarakhand and is also called the Himalayan Peacock.
After a short break, you continue towards the summit of Chandrashila. It’s a further 1-1.5 km trek and is steeper than Tungnath. You might see blue sheep and Himalayan Tahr on your way up to the summit. Chana offers a 360⁰ view from the summit of the Himalayas. After spending good quality time at the summit of Chandrashila, its time to trek down to Chopta.
Day 03: Chopta - Sari Village - Deoria Tal - Sari - Rishikesh
Enjoy your beautiful morning at Chopta. The drive to Sari is beautiful as you pass by the narrow hilly roads and dense forest around. The trek to Deoria Tal is a short trek (3 km) and the dazzling reflection of Mt. Chaukhambha is worth the effort. If you like bird photography, this place might turn into a paradise for you. After spending some quality and soul-soothing time, trek sown to Sari Village. Depart for Rishikesh.
Day 04: Reach Delhi.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport from Chopta, situated 224 km away from the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand state. You can book a taxi or a cab from the airport to reach Chopta.
By Rail: The nearest railhead to Chopta is Rishikesh situated 210 km away. You can book a cab from the railway station to reach Chopta.
By Road: Rishikesh is well connected to all major cities of north India. Chopta which is about 210 km away from Rishikesh will take around 7-8 hours. You can book a cab or take public transport to reach Chopta.
